My husband, Doug Bradshaw just received the mitochondrial portion of his DNA testing and it indicates that he belongs to the U5 haplogroup.  I believe this means that he may have Ulster in his maternal ancestry but I am guessing here.

Doug's maternal lineage is Boger, Tunstall, Harris, Brittain, Smith, Carson, McDowell and Edmiston.  John McDowell is believed to be from Scotland (born 1717) and died in Burke County, NC.  His wife is believed to be Anne Evans Edmiston.  Their daughter, Rachel married John Carson who was born in Fermanagh Co., Ulster, Ireland in 1751/52 and also died in Burke County, NC.
Their daughter Sarah married William Davidson Smith in Burke County, NC and they both died in San Augustine County, TX.  William Davidson Smith's mother was a Davidson, also from Ireland but this is not my husband's maternal lineage.

Can anyone provide any further information about the U5 haplogroup?

Thanks.

Connie Bradshaw
