My ancestor, Daniel Lane, was born in Ulster about 1725-30. Family lore states he married Margaret Turner in Ulster, Ireland before they settled in Hanover County, Virginia about 1750.

Is the last name "Lane" common in Ulster? So far I've found a Walter Lane in Donegal in 1660, a Nicklaus Lane in BallyKelly, Londonderry, in the census of 1659. (I also found some Turner's in the same location) and a Thomas Lane, who's name appeared on a list of the defenders during the siege of Londonderry.

I'd like to find out what part of Ulster Daniel Lane and Margaret Turner came from.

I just got back the results of my y37 marker test from FTDNA and it shows that I'm R1b1b2e M222, which seems to be native to Ulster.

 Any help would be welcome.

Chris, make sure you join the Ulster Heritage DNA Project if you have not already done so.  Your surname from Mac Giolla Eáin, many of those in Ulster both as Gallóglaigh and later Redshanks.  One of the main groups in Ulster in these genres.  Send me an email (go to the main Ulster Heritage site for my contact data) and I'll take a look at your results for you.  My surname is similar to yours, McCain from Mac Eáin, you would not believe how many times in the past I was called Mr McClain.   In Gaelic often the Giolla gets contracted in speech, so Giolla Eáin is said 'L Eáin'  i.e. Lane.
